Joined Oklahoma University in 2007 where he serves as the Frank and Henrietta Schultz Professor of Geophysics within the ConocoPhillips School of Geology and Geophysics. Marfurt´s primary research interest is in the development and calibration of new seismic attributes to aid in seismic processing, seismic interpretation, and reservoir characterization. Dr. Kurt Marfurt received his Ph.D in applied geophysics at Columbia University’s Henry Krumb School of Mines in New York in 1978. He worked 18 years in a wide range of research projects at Amoco’s Tulsa Research Center. PRIMARY AREAS OF TECHNICAL EXPERTISE: Seismic Processing. Seismic Interpretation. Reservoir Characterization. EDUCATION: Ph.D., 1978, Applied Geophysics, Columbia University. M.S., 1975, Applied Geophysics, Columbia University. A.B., 1973, Physics and French, Hamilton College. RESEARCH: My primary research interest is in the development and calibration of new seismic attributes to aid in seismic processing, seismic interpretation, and reservoir characterization. Recent work has focused on applying coherence, spectral decomposition, structure-oriented filtering, and volumetric curvature to mapping fractures and karst as well as attribute-assisted processing.

ABOUT COURSE

 

OBJETIVE

The primary objective of this course is to gain an intuitive understanding of the Kinds of seismic features that can be identified by 3D seismic attributes, the sensitivity of seismic attributes to seismic acquisition and processing, and of how “independent” seismic attributes can are coupled through geology. We will also discuss alternative workflows using seismic attributes for reservoir characterization as implemented by modern commercial software and practiced by interpretation service companies. 

 

Participants are invited to bring case studies from their workplace that demonstrates either the success or failure of seismic attributes to stimulate class discussion.

1. INTRODUCTION STRUCTURAL STYLES  

  • Course objectives and historical perspective.
  • Color display and 3D visualization.  

 

2. THE PHYSICAL AND GEOLOGICAL BASIS OF SEISMIC ATTRIBUTES

  • Spectral decomposition and thin bed tuning.
  • Complex trace attributes.
  • Horizon and formation attributes.
  • Geometric attributes.

  - Volumetric dip/azimuth

  - Coherence

  - Volumetric curvature

  - Lateral changes in amplitude and seismic

  - Textures

 

3. ATRIBUTTE EXPRESSION OF STRUCTURE AND STRATIGRAPHY

  • Tectonics and diapirism.
  • Clastic depositional systems.
  • Carbonate depositional systems.
  • Geologic hazards.

 

4. ATRIBUTTE AND THE SEISMIC PROCESSOR 

  • Impact of data quality on seismic attributes.
  • Structure-oriented _ltering.

 

5. ATRIBUTTES USED IN RESERVOIR CHARACTERIZATION 

  • Inversion for acoustic and elastic impedances.
  • Multiattribute analysis tools.
  • Reservoir characterization work_ows.
  • 3D texture analysis and computer-aided object.
